The Sandwich Fair
From our correspondent in northern Illinois, we have some pictures from the recent Sandwich Fair. The Sandwich Fair is the oldest continous fair in the Midwest, according to Dennis Hastert (and we know a politician would never lie).
I always like to visit the horticulture displays, and I couldnt' be there in person so I talked somebody into taking pictures for me (Hi, Dad). Today I received a CD in the mail with 58 pictures (Thanks, Dad). I selected the most fall-like ones, I think, for posting here. We have no less than seven pictures of corn and each one is a different type. And for good measure, I included blue-ribbon-winner socks and a birdhouse made from Farm & Fleet yardsticks.

Thank your dad for me - that album was a lot of fun! I haven't been to an agricultural fair in quite awhile - and don't even know what pod corn night be. We used to stop in at the Farm & Fleet when we were in Champaign/Urbana, and always found something interesting there.
My personal favorite at fairs used to be the poultry displays with the oh-so-soft-looking Silky Chickens.
Oh you're making me want an old movie - should it be the old one with Dana Andrews & Jeanne Craine? Or the Pat Boone & AnnMargret version?? Beautiful, beautiful bloooo boyyy....

Annie, I always like to see the poultry displays too. And last time I was at the Sandwich Fair I remember seeing Araucana eggs (blue-green) in the egg competition. So cool-looking!
I had heard of pod corn, but never seen any. As I understand it, it's possibly an ancestor of our present-day corn, and is grown for fall decorations. Each kernel is covered by a husk.
Gosh, somehow I've missed seeing State Fair (either version). The very next thing I'm going to do is put it in my Netflix queue. I'm thinking I may like the older one better, but maybe I should watch them both?
Either movie will supply you with plenty of corn! And lots of lovely music from Rodgers and Hammerstein. You kind of have to like old musicals to like either one, I guess.
As a kid, I saw the 1962 version with my family at a drive-in. Pat Boone and AnnMargret were top stars then. I only know the 1945 version from the small screen. The 1962 movie may actually feel more dated, because it made an attempt to be current, thus locking itself firmly into that early sixties time period.
The original 1933 version is not a musical, and not even available, but it would be cool to see Will Rogers acting a part in a movie.
I wonder if the husks on the pod corn could foil the corn borers?
Annie
Well, I like corn (all kinds) ;-)
I put the 1945 version of State Fair in my queue. Sounds like just the thing to warm up with on some cold rainy weekend.
Interesting thought about pod corn and corn borers. I may try to grow some pod corn next year, just out of curiosity.
