Rara Avis

Ladies and Gentlemen, I present to you the very rare black-and-white winged golden hummingbird. I think this may be a new species.
From Tangled Branc...

But seriously folks, I have no idea what these goldfinches think they're doing on the hummingbird feeder, unless they're convinced there must be sunflower seeds in it somewhere. Just last week I replaced "their" feeder with the hummingbird feeder. Apparently they haven't quite figured it out yet. I don't think it's possible for them to get at the nectar.

...spam, spam, spam...

I don't get that much spam here, but really, how many readers of gardening blogs are likely to be buyers of business telcomm equipment?

Blech...I hate getting spam.

Your picture is wonderful ... made me smile. The poor finches probably cannot figure out what happened to their food source!

Kate: I actually have to laugh at the poor birds - they're so funny when I take down their feeder. They cruise in for a landing on autopilot, so to speak, and find out at the last minute that their landing strip is gone. You can almost hear them thinking "I know it was here..." as they change course. But I still have another feeder up for them, just not where they expected it.

We've had the opposite experience, Entangled - I moved the bird bath 6 feet to the left, and it apparently became invisible. The birds wouldn't go near it for a week!

Annie, it seems the birds are such creatures of habit that any teeny tiny little change confuses them. No hummingbirds here yet - I'll keep looking.

Yeah, I guess business telecom equipment is fairly tasteful spam compared to what it could be. I tend to get the other kind in email, not on the blog. Still, it's really irksome when they use the flattery come on - "Great blog! Keep up the good work! [signed] An admirer at XYZ Bus. Com. (with link)"

You're right, birds can be creatures of habit. And as my mother would say, "Remember they have very tiny brains!" ;-)

I love the photo.

That's so cute! I do love the goldfinches, though...so cheery!

Dawn, thanks for stopping by! And yours is another great Austin garden blog! I'm putting you on my blogroll ASAP.

Gotta Garden, the first time I saw a goldfinch here was late summer many years ago - they were eating seeds off a cosmos. I didn't have a bird feeder up at that time, but really wanted to see more goldfinches. I got my wish - they're probably the most common bird at my feeders now.
