Better Hummingbird Pictures
If you like pictures of hummingbirds, then you have come to the wrong place. I'll point you instead to Rob's album. And then read his story about the one in the house.
Once again, as I type this, there's a hummer a few feet in front of me at the coleus flowers. The camera is in the house.

Wow! He sure did a great job with those! I have a similar plight as yours-even if I have the camera with me, the second I'm ready to take the picture, hummer's gone. Ah well...it's a kind of "Holy Grail", eh? ;-)
Lisa: A very good point! If I actually took a good picture of a hummingbird, then I'd have nothing to look forward to. LOL
I have the same problem, they taunt me, today even, one came to the bay window and stared in at me, I grabbed my camera and ran out to no avail! My son and husband got a great laugh out of it! But try as I might I can't even get a bad shot of a hummer! I will look at it like you said though, something to look forward to!
Catherine: They really seem to be hanging around the feeder lately - I guess they'll be off on their fall migration before too long. Summer goes so fast.
You are fortunate to have the hummingbirds stay in your garden. I was surprised to see our second hummingbird this year as we typically see only one despite putting out feeders and planting supposedly attractive plants. It just remained long enough to refuel with some Crocosmia nectar then hovered around one of the Magnolias (perhaps it spotted and insect or grub to eat?) then moved on. So this has been a very good year for butterflies/moths and hummingbirds.
Ki, the hummingbirds are really tanking up at the feeder lately. I think they're getting ready to head south soon. This is the third summer (I think) that I've had the feeder up. Several years ago, I noticed the hummers around a Buddleia, so the next year I planted more Buddleias. Then I noticed them around the Cupheas, so the next year I planted more Cupheas. You can see where this is leading ;-)
Rob, whose blog I linked to, says he sees eight to ten in the yard at a time this year. He decided to put up several cheap feeders instead of just having one, and he thinks that accounts for the increased numbers he's seeing.
