Signs of Spring

Tangled Branches January Photos
Crocus sieberi 'Firefly'
First crocus! Yesterday I noticed a slim pale purple bud and today it was open. Last year this was blooming on January 4, so it may not be a reliable indicator of spring.

But here are a few more signs of spring I noticed today:

Your crocus is like sunshine. I am so glad you saw it and shared it. No crocus here yet, but soon, there will be.

I'm watching and waiting for my first crocus, too. What a welcome bit of color in the garden.

That must have been a welcome sight along with the other signs of spring.

I laughed when I read that you were off at the garden centre buying seeds ... my first thought was, I wonder if there were orchids there too!

Dee: And there's a big bright yellow center to that crocus that really does look like sunshine. I hope the squirrels let me enjoy it wide open before they chew it off ;-)

Carol: Crocus watch is fun, and you're so right about the color. I think the first crocus is a lot like the first tomato.

Kate: Way too many orchids! I was overwhelmed and couldn't make a decision. Buying them all was out of the question. I think I'm going to look someplace with a smaller (and cheaper) selection.

Spring is nowhere in sight in Chicagoland - just more cold & snow. Thanks for the cheery photo; I needed it!

Mr. McGregor's Daughter: We're back to winter here today with rain and freezing rain :-(

A family member in northern Illinois requested that I not post any more pictures of flowers. I think she was kidding (Hi Mom).

Impatience is not a strong enough word for the feeling of wanting spring to arrive, yesterday is not soon enough. I bought peas, carrots and radish seeds that can be planted outside this month and the ground is frozen or the wind is blowing my hat off to get them in the prepared ground. Just one warm day....

Frances: The warm days are coming this week, right? I'm planting radishes in the cold frame this weekend. Planted coriander and lettuce seeds there last weekend, but no signs of germination yet.

I'm so jealous! It will be awhile here yet. I have noticed a few flies buzzing around in the bathroom, which is on the southeast corner of the house on the second floor.

I like all the species Crocus. That one's one of my favorites.

I'm on Crocus watch in my front garden. They've had their little ears poking up for abut two weeks now, with more of them every day.

A crocus! Now, that's exciting.
I'm not ready for Spring, yet. And Winter's not ready to leave, anyway. I have too many indoor projects to work on. :-)

Kylee: Maybe the flies know something we don't? We can hope anyway.

Xris: I'm with you on the species Crocus. This is only my second? year with 'Firefly'. I liked it so much that I planted C. sieberi 'Tricolor' last fall, but no sign of those yet. Post pictures when yours bloom!

Shady Gardener: I really like indoor projects in the fall and early winter, but I'm itching to get outside now.

Wow! crocus already. Ours are just starting to peek out of the soil.

Ki: They'll be blooming before you know it. It seemed like the leaves came up one day and they were blooming the next.
