A Day at the Beach
Let's not work in the garden this weekend - let's go to the beach.
So we did. After living in Virginia for over 20 years, we visited Virginia Beach for the first time this weekend. For a longer vacation we prefer the relative seclusion of Hatteras Island, but Virginia Beach is closer and doable for an overnight trip.
The beach is completely lined with high-rise hotels behind a long "boardwalk" (actually concrete) and adjacent bike path. The view is better looking out from the hotel than from the beach looking back. The beach itself seemed quite clean and orderly given the number of people there. This photo was taken Sunday morning when there were fewer people than Saturday afternoon.
We'd probably go back, but not in the middle of summer and not for a long stay. A night or two is about right.

I looks like a beautiful day! I went to the seashore yesterday, but not actually to the beach. :)
Hatteras is a place we visited long ago, but even though we have cousins who live in Virginia Beach we've never been there. It looks pretty good on the screen, Entangled!

Hi, Entangled--I've been trying to catch up on my blog reading, sorry I haven't been by in a while. I hope you've had a great time in Virginia Beach--we really enjoy it, although it's often easier for us to get to Duck, NC--it's farther, but the traffic's often easier. And I loved your previous postings on your peppers and your flowers--I can't wait to get your hot sauce recipe. Happy travels.
Nancy: Anything close to the ocean counts as "the beach" to me. I grew up surrounded by cornfields and any body of water is a real attraction.
Annie: We were somewhat reluctant to go to Virginia Beach after seeing Ocean City, Maryland a few years ago. We hated OC (tacky bars and trinket shops) and assumed Virginia Beach would be the same. And Virginia Beach did have some tacky bars and trinket shops, but they were across the street from the hotels and not visible from the beach.
The camera was very flattering to the sea and sky - they weren't quite that blue.
Cosmo: No apologies needed - I'm having difficulty this summer finding time to blog and read blogs and garden.
Haven't been to the Outer Banks for a couple of years, but the trip there is so much easier since they opened the new toll road. When we first started going there it was 2-lane roads all the way from Great Bridge to Kitty Hawk.
Pepper sauce post is overdue - hopefully tomorrow!
