The County Fair, Part 4 (Livestock)
I like chickens. I don't have any, so when I go to fairs I always have to see the chickens. I wish they had other poulty at the Sandwich Fair as well, but apparently only chickens are allowed.
It is a chicken. Honestly.
Rabbits with eye makeup? Looks like it, but they're a breed called Dwarf Hotot. The eyeliner is part of the standard.
The larger livestock is a little harder to photograph unless you get a chance to see the judging. This cow apparently won a red ribbon, whether she wanted to be in the show or not.

Wow, those chickens are beautiful!!! I've told my husband we should get chickens for our shed but 1.) I'm pretty sure our dog would eat them and 2.) now our shed is turning into our pool house so I guess I'll have to wait until I retire to a farm some day to get my own poultry!
(And once again, I read it as "livestock JUGGLING". Ha!)
Ha, I remember the country fair I went to when I was staying with my aunt in Seaside Calif. It was great fun except for the crying kids who had to leave their pet farm animals behind as they were to be judged and then slaughtered (the animals I mean, not the kids).
Chickens are fun, aren't they? Still dreaming of having a few myself some day.
Frau Farmer: Hen house or pool house? Tough decision!
For the record, I didn't see any livestock juggling. ;-)
Yolanda: That is the sad part about livestock I guess. :-(
I was disappointed there were no ducks at the fair. Eliot Coleman's Four-Season Harvest convinced me that ducks are better garden companions than chickens. In a perfect world, I'd have both though.
Silkies won my heart when I was a kid, Entangled and they're still pretty cool.
Did you ever read Bailey White's "Quite A Year for Plums" with Della the painter of chickens? The Dominickers she described sound like that top, black and white chicken. The book's somewhere around here - might have to pull it out after reading this post!

Annie: I forgot to note the names of the chicken breeds, but I headed over to paperbackswap.com to put in my request for "Quite a Year for Plums" and noticed the cover illustration looks a lot like my chicken photo. Sooooo....could be.
I haven't read any of Bailey White's books up until now, but I always enjoyed listening to her stories on NPR. Quite a Year for Plums sounds like a book I'd enjoy - thanks for the tip!
I hope you like the book, Entangled. The dominickers are supposed to look very similar to one called a Barred Rock. Knowing how to tell the breeds apart could be as tricky as identifying wild birds ;-]
