Back in Business

March 21st, 2010

Looks like this is going to be the new blog then. The appearance is due to a theme I downloaded from WordPress. Not sure if I’m going to keep it or tweak it or completely redo it.¬† Neither have I decided what to do with my old Blogger posts. For right now, they’re available for viewing at http://tangledbranches.com/blog_archive/. Any links to any of my old posts at this location are now broken. (Maybe that’s a good reason to try to import them back into this directory?) And although there is still a link on those posts for leaving comments, puhleeze don’t click on it. I think I disabled comment-publishing from within Blogger, but if I missed something I’m afraid it will stomp all over this new blog. I tried an online conversion tool for the old posts, but apparently my old blog was so big (6 meg export file, 7 years worth) it choked the tool.

Sooooo….I think I’m going to like WordPress, but it’s very powerful and that translates into a lot of complexity. Many new features to learn.

It appears I have an RSS feed for this new WordPress blog by default at http://tangledbranches.com/blog/feed/. I hope this fixes the problem of the Blogger feed widget not displaying my posts in Blogger sidebars, but we’ll have to see about that. You may have to enter that address into the widget. I suppose I could create a new blogspot blog and play with the widget to test, then report back.

Speaking of sidebar widgets, I decided to recreate my blogroll from scratch instead of just importing the old one. Probably a mistake. Definitely more work. I’ll be updating it over the next few days; only have a few in the list so far. I thought I was going to organize by geography, but that’s turning out to be annoying slow so I may glob all the links back into one big list.

That’s it for now. I’ve been fiddling with this since early this¬† morning and I’m going to give it a rest now.

Yes, this is me leaving a comment on my own blog. I wanted to test it.

  2. This is not you testing your blog… it’s me testing your blog!

Hope it all works out Entangled.

Since we can’t comment at the lemongrass post I’ll just mention that it reminded me of the way real French tarragon must be cloned/divided and only the less desirable Russian tarragon comes from seed.

Thanks Annie. WordPress is going to take some getting used to.
I hadn’t thought of the comparison of lemongrass/tarragon, but in both cases I wonder how these plants survived before people propagated them. In any case, I’m happy to have both of them.

Hi Entangled, welcome to wordpress! We made the switch a couple of years ago and love it. However the old blogger posts are a thorn in my side. I transferred them to wordpress, but have not deleted them blogger site, like I want to. There are too many links in my own posts, and those of others to the blogger posts that would be broken if I delete it. I tried going back and changing them all to wordpress but it was too much, even for me, tedious is my middle name, lol. The sidebar does not appear on the blogger posts on wordpress either. I did stop the comments on blogger because spam was showing up on old posts. Good luck with the new site, it looks fabulous! :-)

Thanks Frances. I’m still getting my bearings here with WordPress. Started reading the documentation and found it, um, tedious ;-) , so I just jumped in.
