Oh Deer! (again)

March 14th, 2011

I was just thinking earlier this morning that I hadn’t seen a deer in the backyard for a few weeks. Telepathy – they showed up to reassure me.

Of course, it could be that they wander through every day and I just haven’t seen them. They’re so well camouflaged that unless I see them move, I might not notice them.

Their hoofprints are all over the kitchen garden, however. They even walked straight under my re-mesh arch.

(Yes, I know the garden is a mess. You should have seen it a few weeks ago. Even worse. I would never have taken a picture of it then.)

After chewing off all the Sweet Williams (Dianthus barbatus) the deer haven’t done much damage there lately. I think the Sweet Williams are going to bounce back.

I hope so; I started them from seed last year and would be very sad if they never bloom.

Sorrel, Rumex acetosa

Sorrel (Rumex acetosa) with Lemongrass mulch

None of the critters has shown any interest in the sorrel this year. Every previous spring I had to wait until they had their fill before I got to harvest any of it. I’m attributing it to the lemongrass mulch. I just strewed some of the dried lemongrass leaves around the sprouting sorrel leaves and, so far, nothing has touched it.

Garden Bloggers’ Bloom Day tomorrow! I have flowers to show you. Some of them, you’ll not have seen before – at least not in my garden.

  1. I really do like your arch! What are you planning to grow on it?

This is the year of the bean at Tangled Branches South. I’ve got peas planted next to it right now (although they won’t need all that height) and then when they’re finished I’m going to plant pole beans. Last year I had cucumbers and Charentais melons there.
