Welcome to the TangledBranches:Cultivated wiki aka CultivatedWiki. I started TangledBranches:Cultivated—a garden blog—in 2003 as a way to keep better garden records and have a little fun while doing it. But over time, I realized that the blog format is excellent for keeping a diary, but not so excellent for organizing information. Enter the wiki. Here I plan to stash information on plants I've grown or want to grow, recipes using ingredients from the garden, and anything else I feel like documenting along the way. Let's see how this develops.

The Kitchen Garden

We broke ground on the central Virginia kitchen garden in May of 2007. Although we call it the kitchen garden, it includes some non-edible ornamental plants as well. The garden is located at a latitude of approximately 38° N. The sunny site slopes gently to the southwest. The soil is sandy. This blog post shows the site.

After expanding it every year, in 2012 we decided to shrink and rethink it. Then in June of 2012, events more important than a few vegetables called me away from the garden. We will continue to plant and harvest on a small scale as time permits.

Cooking from the Garden

Recipes and/or ideas from TangledBranches blogs and TangledBranches: CultivatedWiki

Recipes and/or ideas from elsewhere

Winter Diversion: Mushrooms

We received two mushroom kits for Christmas 2012. Pioppino and Shiitake. I started cultivating them on 19 January 2013. Over the next couple months, we harvested several flushes of the Pioppino, but didn't get many from the Shiitake. Shiitake was supposed to be easier. Go figure. Anyway, growing the Pioppino mushrooms was a revelation. They were incredibly fragrant and delicious.

Winter Diversion: Aerogarden

I have had a lot of objections to Aerogardens. They're expensive. They're not natural. They're not environmentally responsible. And now they have a Miracle-Gro logo. Should you decide to buy one, you may be scorned by many serious gardeners. But. I bought one anyway. The biggest one with LED lights (more eco-conscious than CFL) and a herb starter kit. And after two weeks (3 December 2014), I'm rather impressed with the thing. It pretty much takes care of itself. It remains to be seen, though, how the herbs taste.

The Orchard

New in 2012. We're starting with apples and may branch out into other tree fruits. All the following were 1-year bare-root plants, purchased from Vintage Virgnia Apples, planted on 9 April 2012. All are sprouting new leaves as of 6 May 2012. Deer are chewing on the top leaves as of 13 May 2012. We cobbled together a makeshift fence from T-posts and fishing line on 5 June 2012. As of 10 June, it was still intact and seemed to be working. The shoots were growing with no new damage apparent. By the end of the season, however, the fence failed and the deer had chewed off all trees except the tallest 'Pomme Gris', and even rubbed the bark off some trees. Early in 2013, we noticed that the tallest 'Pomme Gris', which had so far escaped damage, had all the bark rubbed off and the tree was broken off about halfway up. We then installed 36" tall vinyl tree guards.

The Wild World
